Drop in Ad Revenue Raises Tough Question for Newspapers

Interesting article in the NYT - per an analyst:

“There is absolutely no question that the next 10 years are going to be really bad for the newspaper business. This is a time of wrenching change and chaos. All of our assumptions about newspapers are going to be changed. The format, the business model, the organization of newspapers have outlived their usefulness.”

ALL I HAVE HEARD FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS IS HOW THE "SKY IS FALLING" FOR NEWSPAPERS IN AMERICA. HISTORY SHOWS THAT EVERYTIME A MEDIA IS BROUGHT INTO SOCIETY NEWSPRINT CIRCULATION FALLS. RADIO, TELEVISION, NEWSREELS ALL HELPED IN DROPPING THE CIRCULATION OF NEWSPAPERS. HOWEVER, EACH MEDIUM REQUIRES NEWSPAPER FOR THE NEWS THEY REPORT OR FOR THE STORY THEY PORTARY ON SCREEN.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT, RADIO TELEVISION, AND NEWSPAPER MADE THE UNITED STATES THE O.P.E.C. OF KNOWLEDGE. EACH REQUIRE THE OTHER TO TRIVE AND SURVIVE. WEBLOGS REQUIRE NEWSPAPERS TO DO THE "DOG" WORK TO GET THE NEWS THEY REPORT AND, AT THE SAMETIME, DESTROY THE MEANS THAT FEED THE NEWS CONSUMING BLOGS.

THE COLLEGE-AGED TWENTY SOMETHINGS WILL BECOME MIDDLE-AGED FORTY SOMETHING QUICKER THAN THEY WILL KNOW. WITH ALL OF THOSE TINY SCREENS AND FAILING EYESIGHTS, THERE ONLY RECOURSE WILL BE EYEGLASSES AND NEWSPAPERS.

THE GOLDEN AGE OF NEWSPAPERS HASN'T EVEN ARRIVED IN AMERICAN HISTORY. NEWSPAPERS MUST CHANGE BUT THEY ARE NOT RELEGATED TO THE TRASH BIN OF HISTORY.

BY THE WAY, THE LATEST CIRCULATION NUMBERS COME FROM FEBRUARY. MOST OF THE MIDWEST AND NORTHEAST SUFFERED THROUGH AN EXTREMELY HARSH MONTH. A BLIZZARD AND BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES. PEOPLE JUST DIDN'T PLACE ADS IN PAPERS. THEY WERE MORE CONCERNED DIGGING THEMSELVES OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY.
